Finding the Light in a Heavy World
It is incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed these days. Between the tragedies we see on the evening news and the endless scroll of negativity on our social media feeds, it can sometimes feel as though we are drowning in a sea of despair. Add our own personal griefs, burdens, and daily dramas to the mix, and the weight of the world can seem unbearable.
But as believers, we are not called to live in defeat. We are called to remember that even in the midst of trials and tribulations, we have an anchor.
There is a beautiful, modern resonance in the ancient promise found in Isaiah 59:19: “When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.”
Recently, a deeply moving prayer captured this exact sentiment. It is a raw, honest acknowledgment of the hurt and harm around us, but more importantly, it is a bold declaration of faith. It reminds us that praise is not just for the mountaintops; it is our greatest weapon in the valleys.
If you are feeling weighed down by the noise of the world today, take a moment to read and meditate on this powerful prayer.
A Prayer of Praise in the Storm
"But the good news is that you have already told us that you prayed for us and that the enemy even when the enemy comes in like a flood, that you have lifted up a standard and that standard is Jesus. So God, in spite of trials and tribulations, in spite of despair and and suffering, in spite of what we see before us, what we hear on the news, oh God, what we hear even from our own feed on social media, we declare today that you are worthy, that you are God, that you are yet moving and working and moving things together, working on our behalf. And even when it doesn't look good to us, we know that it is working together for our good.So in spite of it all God today, even as we come with grief, even as we have issues and drama, even as we have burdens and despair and all of the suffering around us, all of the hurt that we see, all of the harm, we do say that we will give you the praise and the honor and the glory. For thine is the kingdom..."
Choosing Praise "In Spite Of It All"
What makes this prayer so beautiful is its defiant use of the phrase: "in spite of."
Faith does not demand that we ignore our reality. This prayer doesn't pretend that the grief, the issues, the drama, or the news don't exist. Instead, it looks directly at the flood of modern-day anxieties and chooses to elevate God above them. It leans heavily on the promise of Romans 8:28—that even when a situation doesn't look good to our human eyes, God is behind the scenes weaving it together for our ultimate good.
The next time you find your heart racing because of a headline, or your spirit sinking because of a heavy burden, return to these words. Remember that the standard has already been lifted, and that standard is Jesus.
You don't have to wait for the storm to pass to give Him the glory. You can offer your praise in spite of the storm, knowing that He is already working on your behalf.
