“‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.’ And the second is this: ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.’”
- Matthew 22:37–39
In recent months, Springfield, Ohio, has garnered national attention for its thriving Haitian immigrant population and the contributions they make to their community. Many Haitians are drawn to this small town because of economic opportunities and the residents who welcome them.
At least 10 percent of the workforce at McGregor Metal, a major manufacturer in Springfield, are Haitian immigrants. And CEO Jaime McGregor appreciates their positive impact on his business.
“Our Haitian associates come to work every day,” said McGregor. “They don’t have a drug problem, they stay at their machines, they achieve their numbers, they are here to work [...] and that’s a sharp difference from what we’re used to.”
Haitian immigrants’ multifaceted integration and influence in our country has shaped various aspects of life not just in Springfield, but throughout the United States.
Economic Contributions
Haitian immigrants have played a significant role in the U.S. economy. According to data from the Migration Policy Institute, as of 2021, there were nearly 800,000 Haitian immigrants living in the United States. Haitians contribute across various sectors such as healthcare, education, and service industries. In particular, Haitian immigrants have been instrumental in the healthcare sector, with many working as nurses, medical technicians, and caregivers. The National Haitian American Elected Officials Network (NHAEON) highlights that Haitian immigrants are crucial to these essential professions, helping meet significant needs in communities across the country.
Haitian-owned businesses in the U.S. have also been on the rise, further stimulating our economy and providing employment to community members. The U.S. Haitian Chamber of Commerce provides support and a platform for these immigrants to showcase their services.
Social, Cultural, and Political Impacts
Haitian immigrants have enriched the American landscape with their vibrant traditions, art, and food. Haitian cuisine has become increasingly popular in the U.S., with Haitian restaurants and food trucks gaining in popularity in cities such as Miami, New York, and Boston. Additionally, Haitian immigrants have brought music and literature to this country, introducing Americans to genres such as kompa and rara, which have begun gaining wider recognition. And notable figures like Haitian-American musician Wyclef Jean and writer Edwidge Danticat have achieved significant success, helping bring Haitian culture to a broader audience.
Haitian immigrants have also made strides in social and political spheres. Political engagement has been a crucial aspect of their integration into American society. The election of Haitian-American politicians such as Maxine Waters, a U.S. Representative from California, demonstrates the growing influence of the Haitian community in American politics.
A Path to Prosperity
Haitian immigrants have profoundly enriched this country’s economy, culture, and social fabric. Their presence has not only brought diversity, but has also highlighted the immigrant’s capacity for success when supported by accepting and caring communities. As the U.S. continues to benefit from the diverse contributions of its immigrant communities, recognizing and supporting the achievements of Haitian immigrants remains essential for fostering a more inclusive and prosperous society.
